Here’s example of a tattoo which is filled solid, like tribal, but so cool. The customer had the idea of getting the brush effect. It turned out great and makes the piece unique and much more interesting.

We are approaching the third anniversary since we opened the tattoo side of the shop. In November/December 2008 we finished the insane project to make the garage stall right next to our upholstery and airbrush shop into a tattoo shop. Before that Jon was tattooing out of a different local tattoo shop. We are so glad we took that crazy leap of faith. The support we’ve had and the friends we’ve met over the last three years have made all the long hours and late nights worth it. Thank you for your continued support of Larsons Creative Concepts!

Advice from a Tattoo Shop Owner

Getting a tattoo is one of the biggest commitments you can make in your life. The decision is right up there with getting married or having a child; the tattoo is going to be there forever after all. Unfortunately just as every marriage doesn’t stick or a little too much liquid courage can speed up the family-planning process, so too can tattoos appear on people’s skin with little forethought. Though cover-ups are a good income for us, we’d rather see you getting ink you love.

After running a tattoo shop for several years, we’ve seen the mistakes. To make sure you continue to love your ink years from now, here are some nuggets of wisdom to consider as you plan your next tattoo.

Go Big or Go Home

On of the most common mistakes we see people make is the “testing the water” tattoo, i.e. a tattoo that is too small. I should know; I have one myself. Our advice is to make sure the tattoo fits the space you’re putting it on. If you put a tattoo the size of a quarter on your shoulder blade it’s just going to look like a weird birthmark… and you won’t be happy with it. I’m not saying you have to get a full back piece for your first tattoo, but you should consider the art in proportion to the body.

Make It Personal

Please, please have your tattoo means a lot to you and avoid trends. Even further, have it express who you really are. (This is at the core of why we don’t tattoo minors – like they know who they’ll be and if they will still love Betty Boop in 30 years.) We love tattoos in tribute to family because they mean so much to the customers who gets them. I am not saying you can’t get a tribal tattoo if you really, really, really love tribal. I am saying make sure you really, really, really love it.

Seriously Consider Your Professional Future

As a tattoo shop owner, I would love to tell you no one will judge you for having tattoos. But, the reality is people will judge. For many people a large throat tattoo screams tough guy, not banker. For example, I have a very corporate-America day job in addition to my tattoo shop duties. I also have a tattoo on my wrist. When I started a new job at a Catholic healthcare organization I was asked to cover the tattoo and I obliged.

The thing is you better either get your tattoos only in places that can be covered, or be ready to possibly have your tattoos limit your career. Granted tattoos are more mainstream than ever before, but we still have a long way to go. In the meantime, I wore a lot of large bracelets until my work performance outshined my wrist tattoo.

With a little extra planning and thought, you can find the perfect tattoo design and placement and love your new piece of skin art. Tattoos can be an incredible form of expression if done correctly, and I hope these tips help you as you plan your next piece of ink. As we say, “it’s an addiction.”
